The Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) Scheme was introduced by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955, in August 2005. The Scheme provides for registration as an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) of all Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) who were citizens of India on 26th January 1950 or thereafter or were eligible to become citizens of India on 26th January 1950, except who is or had been a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh or such other country as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify.

A registered Overseas Citizen of India is granted a multiple entry, multipurpose, lifelong visa for visiting India; he/she is exempted from registration with the Foreign Regional Registration Officer or Foreign Registration Officer for any length of stay in India and is entitled to general 'parity with Non-Resident Indians in respect of all facilities available to them in economic, financial and educational fields except in matters relating to the acquisition of agricultural or plantation properties'.

Eligibility for registration as an OCI Cardholder
  • The following categories of foreign nationals are eligible for registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Cardholders:
    • Any person of full age and capacity:
      • who is a citizen of another country, but was a citizen of India at the time of, or at any time after, the commencement of the Constitution i.e., 26.01.1950; or
      • who is a citizen of another country, but was eligible to become a citizen of India at the time of the commencement of the Constitution i.e., on 26.01.1950; or
      • who is a citizen of another country, but belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15.08.1947; or
      • who is a child, a grandchild or a great-grandchild of such a citizen; or
    • A person, who is a minor child of a person mentioned in (a) above; or
    • A person, who is a minor child, and whose both parents are citizens of India or one of the parents is a citizen of India; or
    • Spouse of foreign origin of a citizen of India or spouse of foreign origin of an Overseas Citizen of India Cardholder registered under section 7A of the Citizenship Act, 1955 and whose marriage has been registered and subsisted for a continuous period of not less than two years immediately preceding the presentation of the application.
  • The following categories of foreign nationals are NOT eligible for registration as Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Cardholders:
    • Who or either of whose parents or grandparents or great-grandparents is or had been a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh, or such other country as the Central Government may, by notification in the Official Gazette, specify.
    • Foreign Military/Police personnel either serving or retired.
Common Mistakes in OCI applications resulting in rejection
  • Poor quality of uploaded photo/signature. Please ensure to upload a good quality photo and signatures as per prescribed specifications.
  • All supporting documents are not uploaded online.
  • Incorrect passport number/date of issue of passport
  • Incorrect name/place of birth/date of birth
  • Full names of parents/spouse not mentioned or do not match their current legal names
  • Marital status/spouse name not mentioned
  • Incorrect contact numbers and email address
  • Part B of OCI application not signed / Part B (Minor Child) not signed by any of the parents
  • Previous name not mentioned (if there is a change of name, kindly mention the same in the relevant column of the application and provide supporting documents)
  • Incomplete postal address (please provide a complete address and ZIP code in the application)
  • Proof of native address not provided (proof of native address must be provided if the application is being submitted in a country of residence other than the home country).
